What Is an Energy Meter With CT?

 

An energy meter with CT refers to a meter that uses external CT for current sampling during installation. energy meter with CT have specific advantages in terms of measuring current expansion and installation convenience, which makes them popular among users.

 

Specific advantages of energy meter with CT are as follows:

1. Energy meter with CT rely on external current transformers for measuring current, allowing for non-contact measurements. This reduces the number of connections for power lines during the meter installation process, preventing safety hazards related to direct contact with high voltage. As a result, it enhances safety and reliability.

2. Energy meter with CT utilize current transformers for installation, providing the ease of quick setup. During the installation process, only the current transformer needs to be connected to the circuit being measured, without any modification required. This simplification makes the installation easier, operation more straightforward, and maintenance less costly.


3. Energy meter with CT use an external CT for measuring current, which allows them to measure large currents over a wide range. This can be achieved by replacing the current transformer according to the usage requirements. Generally, energy meters with a CT are required for currents above 100A.

4. Energy meter with CT typically have a higher measurement accuracy than ordinary energy meters, allowing for more accurate measurements of the power system's operational status and power consumption.

5. Energy meters equipped with CT are capable of resisting electromagnetic interference and lightning shocks, thus ensuring stable operation in complex environments. Transformer-type energy meters include sampling devices like current transformers or dividers within their design. Common forms of current transformers include 100:5, 200:5, 500:5, 1000:5, 2000:5, etc. And they need to be multiplied by the transformation ratio during calculations.

Direct-type energy meter with CT directly input the current signal obtained from the externally installed current transformer into the meter's measuring chip. Common forms of current transformers include coil turn ratios of 2000:1, 3000:1, etc. The measured data obtained is the actual power consumption data.

 

 

Switchable CTs can be more effectively utilized for installing energy meters that require a CT. In the application of energy meter with CT, many are retrofitted, requiring the installation of energy meter with CT that often have large currents, thick power lines, and challenges in installation and operational positions. Additionally, there are concerns about whether the installation process can be paused or shut down for a prolonged duration. Using switchable current transformers (CTs) does not require dismantling the original circuit connections. You simply need to open the switchable CT and connect it to the measured power line. The installation of switchable CTs is very convenient, but there are a few key points to note: ensure that the magnetic core section is completely aligned, the magnetic core section is free of dust or stains, and tighten the connection after closing. Otherwise, it will have a certain impact on the measurement accuracy of energy meter with CT.
